Ron Gilbert writes on his weblog that 15 year ago this month, one of the greatest adventure games of all time (heck, it’s one of the greatest games period, no genre needed), Monkey Island, made it’s way to the stores and onto computers all over the world.

Monkey Island - Disk 144

Ahh… the memories. Why, oh, why, don’t they make games like than anymore?

Day of Defeat: Source Released

If you already have one of the Half-Life 2 packages on Steam you can just restart your Steam client to recieve the Steam unlock and begin decrypting the game.

Day of of Defeat: Source is really really good. Take it from someone who has played the “non-Source” version alot.

Spam stampede

Posted: September 25th, 2005 | Author: Simon | Filed under: Clippings | Comments Off

This site is being overrun by spam comments at the moment. Just today it got hit by over 200 spam comments. But that’s not so unusual, the unusual thing is that most of them look like genuine comments but often lead to obscure websites selling obscure pharmaceuticals.
It’s becoming quite tedious to read through all of the comments that are caught by the comment moderation, so some real comments might have been deleted by mistake.

If you fell that’s the case for your comment, please post your comment again or e-mail me and I’ll try to sort it out.

Amazing MMORPG tale

A guild in MMORPG ‘EVE online‘ recently spent 12 months infiltrating a competing guild in order to assassinate it’s leader and take it’s assets. Amazing MMORPG tale.

5 years of Blackwood

Posted: September 20th, 2005 | Author: Simon | Filed under: Noteworthy | 1 Comment »

The first post in this weblog was written on September 20, 2000 just before noon. 5 years and still going (strong?). So far gotten 19.217 spam comments (no, really. Almost 20.000 spam comments), and they are still coming in spades.

So what have happened in the past 5 years? Well, let?s take a stroll down memory lane and see what we find.

  • I’ve had my 15 kilobytes of fame with the Gamasutra Postmortem Analysis, which at the time geared a lot of traffic for my site.
  • I’ve changed the language of this weblog from Danish to English, and that have in turn tripled the unique hits so I now have between 80 and 100 unique hits a day, which I think is pretty damn nice that at so many people like to read what I write.
  • I’ve tried to get a clearer focus on the weblog, and am still struggling with that. Games seem to be the number one topic but books and movies sneak in there once in a while.
  • Last year I did a recap of some of the different designs that have been here on Blackwood.dk and AllSimon.net as it was once called. Currently I’m using the new WordPress template by Michael Heilemann and Chris J. Davis called K2. Both K2 and the previous template Kubrick stands for me as some of the best and most beautiful templates ever created for any weblog system around.
  • I’ve completed two educations and am currently completing my third at the IT-University of Copenhagen, which stands for me as the best place to educate your self. Period. Everything about the place is superb. And this fall I’m writing a paper on power structures in World of Warcraft (which basically means that I get time to play a lot of World of Warcraft in the coming months).
  • My post about role-playing in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas got slashdotted (it?s been what?), although it was more indirectly, but still, it counts as a highlight in my book.
  • I’ve become married to the woman of my dreams, which never seize to amaze me.
  • And she has born me a wonderful son, which I am forever grateful for.
  • In short, I?m have the time of my life.

Now, if I only could get some sleep everything would be perfect, I am currently so tired that zombies seem more up-beat than me and if I stand still for more than 30 seconds I simply fall asleep. Well, can’t have everything.

I’ve forgotten to mention that some weeks ago I finally hit level 60 with my mage in World of Warcraft. It had taken my so long that I’d forgotten that I promised myself that I would post here when it happened. Well, now you know.

Avatars

I have created a mirage of different characters that I play a little of each. But it is nothing compared to other players I’ve meet in “meat-space“. Some have 20-30-40 even 50 characters, and they play all of them. None of them are high-levels yet, but still, that is a lot of characters that needs mending.

My played time in total is around 22 days. As in 528 hours. Yicks! Think of the money I’ve could made by taking up a part-time job instead. But this makes World of Warcraft one of the games I?ve spent most time on ever, and that is in itself quite an accomplishment for Blizzard Entertainment.
